History of Leicester

The city of Leicester today boasts a diverse economy. Did you know that it is actually one of the oldest cities in the UK? It dates back to pre-Roman times and has experienced many significant events over the years.

The Romans arrived in the area as they were looking to conquer southern Britain. In 2013, evidence of a Roman cemetery outside of the old city walls was discovered. It wasn’t until the industrial era that the area really started to flourish. Its population started to boom as transport links and factories were built. While living standards were increasing in Victorian times, Leicester was known as a place of radicalism. It wasn’t until around 1881 that the people of Leicester started to become more accepting.

These days, the city has a booming economy. There are businesses across a wide range of sectors, helping to make the city a key business hub.
